The landscape of mental health in India presents a significant concern, with 14% of the country's population living with mental disorders in 2019. This figure surpasses the global average, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive intervention. Alarmingly, over three-fifths of this affected population comprises children and young adults, posing a threat to India's potential "demographic dividend" and hindering the nation's economic growth. In 2019, India accounted for 19% of the global population living with mental disorders, with a staggering 188 million individuals affected. This disproportionate burden underscores the severity of the issue and the pressing need for targeted mental health initiatives. Furthermore, the inadequacy in mental health infrastructure is glaring, with only 0.75 psychiatrists per 100,000 people in India, well below the recommended ratio of over 3 per 100,000. This shortage of mental health professionals results in undertreated cases, exacerbating the impact of mental health disorders on individuals and society at large. Addressing the mental health landscape in India requires immediate attention and strategic interventions. A multifaceted approach involving increased investment in mental health infrastructure, awareness campaigns, and education initiatives is crucial to mitigate the socioeconomic repercussions of untreated mental health disorders. Failure to act comprehensively risks not only the well-being of millions but also the potential of India's demographic advantage in driving sustained economic growth.
